As a Black or Brown LGBTQ+ person, safety is so important and it can be difficult to find experiences tailored to us, especially darker-skinned individuals. This is the first in my series of Safer countries for Black/Brown LGBTQ+ Travelers. Keep in mind, these are my personal experiences as a lighter skin Black person who usually travels on her own. Though I often meet up with other travelers of color, I do have some privilege as I can usually blend in with the locals.

Now, obviously, racism is everywhere and no one place is perfect, but these are the locations I’ve found to be most welcome. We deserve to experience the world too!

So, the next country that should go on your travel list is Ireland!

If you’re already in Europe, then the flight or train ticket is decent, around 150 euros. Most people speak English and the country is easy to navigate. Exploring the architecture is a must, there are so many hidden gems around the country, look at this secret speakeasy!

The drinking age is lower so you’re often surrounded by many different age groups. The food and drink are pretty cheap, especially the beer. And the food is delicious! You will never be bored, there is so much to do!

Ireland also has the typical discrimination protections and many queer nightclubs. Their nightclubs are fun but once again I recommend messaging a promoter through social media, as the nightlife gives you the highest chance of experiencing someone unpleasant. I personally did not run into any safety issues, with three of us being people of color. The night is lively, it feels like the entire city is still out when night falls, but be careful because it does get rowdy!

Ireland definitely holds a place in my heart, I’d go back tomorrow!

Stay tuned for part 3 of safe countries for Queer Black & Brown folk to travel, this is Tia On Tour where curiosity meets community!
